{"id":2120,"date":"2015-12-28T12:54:29","date_gmt":"2015-12-28T12:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gillespieinsuranceservices.com\/?p=2120"},"modified":"2015-12-28T12:54:29","modified_gmt":"2015-12-28T12:54:29","slug":"what-is-considered-first-aid-for-workers-comp-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finfrockweb.com\/gis\/business-insurance\/what-is-considered-first-aid-for-workers-comp-in-california\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Considered First Aid for Workers Compensation in California?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>As an employer in California, you know that every one of your workers comp claims has an impact on your Experience Modification (Xmod). \u00a0Even the small ones.<\/h4>\n<p><!--more-->In fact, because of the way the Workers Comp Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB) has designed the formula to determine your Xmod, the small claims &#8211; under $2,000 &#8211; can have a greater effect on it than the large ones.<\/p>\n<p>It then follows that as an employer, you want to have the least amount of claims possible &#8211; large or small.<\/p>\n<p>How do you accomplish\u00a0this?<\/p>\n<p>There are many way, but knowing about\u00a0First Aid claims is a great way to start.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, what is First Aid?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First Aid, as it pertains to workers comp, means:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any one-time treatment, and any follow-up visit for the purpose of observation of minor scratches, cuts, burns, splinters, or other minor industrial injury, which do not ordinarily require medical care.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 277px;\" width=\"783\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<h2><strong>First Aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<h2><strong>NOT First Aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<ol>\n<li>Minor cut<\/li>\n<li>Minor burn<\/li>\n<li>Splinter<\/li>\n<li>Minor eye injury<\/li>\n<li>Non-prescription medication<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic test with negative findings<\/li>\n<li>One-time treatment with one follow-up visit<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"319\">\n<ol>\n<li>Soft tissue injuries<\/li>\n<li>Major joint injury<\/li>\n<li>Prescription medication<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic test with positive findings<\/li>\n<li>Loss time or modified work beyond date of injury<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>It is worth noting that if your employee needs additional care be\u00a0beyond the one follow-up visit or if there is lost time from work beyond the employee\u2019s work shift, <em>the injury is no longer considered first aid.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Second, why does it matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Because First Aid claims don&#8217;t count as a claim when the WCIRB calculates your Xmod.<\/em> \u00a0You read that correctly. \u00a0Your insurance company will send claim data to the WCIRB and when the WCIRB sees claims categorized as First Aid, they move right past it.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, your workers comp Medical Provider is required to report any and all activity about your employees&#8217;
